Knights
Knights are one of the most well-known types of medieval soldiers. They were expected to support and protect their lord, and defend the castle. the soldiers often fought on horses (hand-to-hand combat) and were heavily armored
Armor was not cheap. The armor had to be tailored to fight the knight exactly right. If it didn't, the armor could restrict the knight's fighting abilities.
Knights followed a guideline called the Code of Chivalry. It stated that knights would be courageous in battle, but at the same be loyal, courteous, and generous.

Foot soldiers
Foot soldiers were another common soldier. They often wore metal armor, a dome shaped helmet, and carried around swords, daggers, and/or pikes (pikes were long long polls with a spear attached to the end). Their job was to protect any archer that was not armored. Often they would set up a defense against many knights. This worked sometimes, but the knights would usually just trample over them on their horses. Although sometimes the knight would get off the horse and fight with the foot-soldier. The knight would usually win due to more protection (armor) and more strength.
Archers
Archers were important open battle soldiers. They could fire up to 15 arrows a minute, although the shots were not very powerful. They often carried a bow and arrow, and a dagger for hand-to-hand combat. Archers wore very little armor. They wore metal jerkins and a helmet. Shields were not common among them.
Crossbowmen
Crossbowmen are very similar to archers, but, they were more important in siege battles. The reason for this was because of how long it took to fire the weapon, and siege battles did not rely on fast attacks. The crossbow was difficult and tedious to load, but the speed of the fire made up for it. The speed and force of the fire was so great, that it had the potential to harm and/or kill an armored knight. They wore little armor, a dome-shaped helmet. They often hid behind large shields during siege battles.
